Carpet Cleaning and Stain Removal
A glass of red wine, a cup of coffee, oil, paint and blood - the threats to your nice cream carpet are endless. No matter how careful we are, accidents can still happen. So what to do? Follow our experts emergency stain removal tips for carpets.
1. Act quickly - The longer the stain is allowed to remain, the more chance it has to set.
2. Pour a little carbonated water on it and blot it up with a white cloth. Remove as much excess stain as you can by blotting, scraping or brushing whatever will come off.
3. DON'T rub it and DON'T use a detergent like Vanish or Fairy Liquid. These detergents may initially seem to be resolve the problem, but they will actually introduce two new problems. First, these cleaners have a high pH level and are sticky. Within a week or so, the sticky residues will have attracted enough dust to leave a black mark on the carpet. The residues can also be damaging to the carpet fibres.
4. If you need more cleaning power than carbonated water, get a professional product like Chem-Dry Professional Strength Spot Remover or Chem-Dry Grease & Oil Remover. First test on a hidden area, blot dry and observe for 10 minutes. Make sure there is no carpet color removal onto the cloth and that, when dry, there is not a visible discoloration in the area you cleaned.
5. Work from the outside edge of the stain to the inside to keep the stain from spreading.
6. Call in a professional cleaner as soon as possible if these efforts do not work.
7. Consider applying a carpet protector like Chem-Dry's Powerguard Protector with every cleaning to give you the best chance for removing stains.
